In one scene, Carter says of Judith, “She’s magnetic.  She’s big and beautiful and smart.  But I don’t trust a word that comes out of her mouth.” And that’s the paradox of Judith.  She pulls everyone in with her sexiness and her charm and her connections, and she honestly cares about her friends and shows them a lot of affection.  But she also has this reckless, selfish, destructive side – something that’s a little hard for Finny to understand, and which causes a lot of trouble and confusion for the men who become entangled with Judith.
